Career

He was born in Istanbul in 1963. He completed his secondary education at Istanbul German High School between 1974 and 1982.

In 1982, he started his medical education at Istanbul University Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine.

He graduated from this faculty in 1988 and, in the same year, started working as a resident in the Department of General Surgery at the same faculty, in the surgical unit directed by his father, Prof. Dr. Erol Düren, the founder and pioneer of modern endocrine and thyroid surgery in Turkey.
During his residency training, he completed his short-term military service at Gölcük Military Hospital.

He became a specialist in general surgery in 1993.

In 1995, he worked as an endocrine surgery clinical research fellow at the Surgery Clinic of Mt. Zion Medical Center, University of California, San Francisco, USA, under Prof. Dr. Orlo Clark, one of the world's leading endocrine surgeons.

He became an Associate Professor of General Surgery in 1997 and a Professor of General Surgery in 2003.

Between 1988 and 2014, he worked at the Endocrine Surgery Unit of the Department of General Surgery at Istanbul University Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine.

He served as the President of the Endocrine Surgery Association between 2008 and 2010.

Prof. Dr. Mete Düren was elected as a member of the Board of Directors of the International Association of Endocrine Surgeons for the term 2010–2016.

He was elected Co-Chairman of the 2016 European Society of Endocrine Surgeons Congress.

Prof. Dr. Mete Düren was elected as a member of the UEFA Medical Committee for the term 2016–2020.
